October 2021 Monthly Meeting

Plan to join our October meeting next Wednesday October 20 at 7 pm to learn more about a tool that many of us take for granted and wonder "What will I do when this gets dull?"

Vincent Tai - a young master of making his own tools and making them sharper will be talking about and demonstrating how to sharpen handsaws.

Vincent will cover such topics as
> - rip and crosscut
> - backsaw variants and panel saws
> - how rake, fleam and set are used in all these saws
> - tensioning backsaws
> - saw restoration tips and tricks

A bit about Vincent from Tam: “Back in the days when I was teaching, Vincent was one of my students. He had a keen interest in making things when he arrived but soon went way beyond what we did in class. If I remember correctly he started cutting dovetails for fun, then made his own plane just to see if he could. After that in his quest for perfection he has developed an amazing knowledge of planes and saws. He has agreed to share some fine points of how hand saws cut and how he sharpens and tunes them.

While Vincent and his friends were in my high school class the junior high students were treated to the sharpest school planes in the city. I have seen his hand made planes make tissue paper shavings as good as the Veritas and Lie Neilsen planes. And since graduating Vincent has restored several vintage Disston backsaws we had at our school that were no longer usable. They now rival high end ones.”
