May 2010 Meeting

Saturday May 22, 2010 - Shop Tours

Five members of SAWS generously opened up their workshops for inspection. Thanks to all of them.

Marian and Richard had just moved into their new shop - an addition to the garage. Everything was neat and compact. There was a large capacity compressor and dust collection system and a beautiful hardwood floor in their shop. Although they share a shop space, each has very different interests: Richard does more turning, and Marian is doing more scroll saw work; hand work (dovetails), etc

Gary's workshop was new. He showed off his new workbench which was constructed from a solid harwood door. It has a twin screw front wooden vice and an wheelwrights end vice. But as one member remarked, it's "Still not big enough to build a boat in!"

Darrel was surrounded by his collection of musical instruments and tools and materials for guitar construction. His workspace fills his 2-car garage.

Jack fills a 2 car garage with his wooden boats. He both builds and restores them. Next to the garage is a workshop space with a huge double sized workbench. This shop has another add-on attached to it.

Andy in front of his "Garage Mahal" - a very large building constructed especially for woodworking. He has all the tools and the space needed to tackle just about any woodworking project. Andy also has a solar wood drying kiln under construction next to the shop.

Japanese Woodworking Tools and Techniques

Wednesday March 17, 7:00 pm
Scarboro Community Hall

The March meeting should be very interesting; Robert Gurney will be speaking about Japanese hand tools and wood working methods. Gary (our president) has spent a significant amount of time in Japan. He's found their culture to be very different than ours and to be very refreshing. We're all looking forward to this topic.

2 X 4 Contest

Wednesday, February 17, 2010 7:00 pm
Scarboro Community Hall

Once again we're having the 2 x 4 Contest. The rules are simple: members build something out of a volume of wood equivalent to a 2 x 4 (2 inches by 4 inches by 8 feet). Two species of wood may be used along with a small amount of hardware if required. A panel of judges will study the pieces brought to the meeting and award prizes.

Annual Show & Tell Meeting

Wednesday, January 20, 2010
7:00 pm Scarboro Community Hall

The January meeting will be the annual "Show & Tell". This year we would like to add a theme of “antiques" to the event. That is not to say the regular fun stuff is not encouraged.

But if you have some heirloom piece or tool please bring it.
